A protester has died of police bullets when the latter opened fire to contain the mounting tension in Birgunj on Monday.
A youth, around 20 years of age, received bullet in his head near Shankharacharya Gate (the entrance gate at the Indo-Nepal border).
More than a dozen including 8 security personnel were injured in the incident.
The injured agitators have received bullets in legs, hands and upper back. They are receiving treatment at Sub-Regional Hospital in Birgunj. Meanwhile, eight police personnel from Nepal Police and Armed Police Force were injured from stones pelted by the the protesters.
Thousands of protesters have gathered in Birgunj from surrounding villages to demonstrate in Birgunj. Although police has taken the situation at Sankaracharya Gate under control, tension has escalated in other parts of the town.
Birgunj turned tense since Monday morning after police intervened to open the Birgunj Customs that was obstructed by the agitators since the past 40 days. Although police succeeded at clearing the obstruction for a brief time, the police move instigated the angry protesterst to take out demonstrations.
